Pope Leo XIV is recovering in a Rome hospital after undergoing surgery to remove part of his right lung, with post-operative testing confirming a diagnosis of pulmonary adenocarcinoma, the Vatican announced.
The operation took place Tuesday at Agostino Gemelli University Policlinic, a hospital with a long history of treating the Catholic Church’s highest-ranking leaders. The 71-year-old pontiff has canceled his public engagements through October 20 as he recuperates.
Vatican officials said the procedure was completed as planned, offering an initial update on the Pope’s condition following a development that has drawn attention from Catholics around the world.
