A quiet Saturday afternoon in Nebraska turned chaotic when an unexpected chain of events inside a parked pickup truck led to a shotgun discharge, sending a blast across a gas station parking lot and injuring an unsuspecting woman in a nearby vehicle, according to local authorities.
The incident unfolded shortly after noon at the Short Stop gas station and convenience store located at 2002 Avenue I, as reported by KNOP. What began as a routine stop quickly escalated into a serious safety incident involving a loaded firearm, a vehicle, and a dog left inside the cabin.
According to the Scottsbluff Police Department, the pickup truck had arrived at the station with multiple occupants. The driver entered the store while another passenger stepped out but remained close to the front passenger-side door. During that time, a dog was left inside the vehicle, reportedly moving freely within the cab.
Authorities say the animal’s movements inside the truck ultimately played a critical role in what happened next. Investigators believe the dog came into contact with a shotgun that had been stored inside the vehicle. Police indicated the firearm appeared to have had a live round chambered, creating the conditions for an accidental discharge.
