A North Carolina high school principal is earning praise after stepping in during a graduation ceremony when a student attempted to transform what was supposed to be a celebratory speech into a political platform.
Graduation ceremonies are traditionally meant to honor the accomplishments of students, recognize years of hard work, and provide encouragement as graduates move into the next chapter of their lives. But at one North Carolina high school, the event took an unexpected turn when the student selected to deliver the valedictory address abandoned her approved remarks and launched into political activism.
Leen Hijaz, a senior at Clayton High School, was chosen to serve as valedictorian because of her academic achievements. The honor typically comes with the responsibility of delivering a speech that reflects on the student experience and offers inspiration to classmates and families gathered for the milestone occasion.
Instead, attendees watched as Hijaz departed from the speech that had reportedly been approved by school officials ahead of the ceremony.
As she neared the conclusion of her remarks, Hijaz shifted away from the graduation theme and began addressing international political issues as well as immigration enforcement.
