Under the current collective bargaining agreement, WNBA players must be women to qualify for the league. However, the agreement reportedly does not provide a detailed definition of sex or gender identity.

That apparent lack of specificity became the focal point of the challenge mounted by Kanter Freedom and White, both of whom publicly declared that they identify as women and sought to test how the league would apply its eligibility standards.
The WNBA’s decision means neither former NBA player will be permitted to enter the draft or compete in the women’s professional basketball league.
The controversy involving Kanter Freedom comes after another recent confrontation surrounding his outspoken views on women’s sports.
As previously reported by The Gateway Pundit, the 6-foot-10 former NBA center attended a Chicago Sky game Sunday wearing a shirt featuring a simple definition of the word woman: “WOMAN noun. adult human female.”
The message quickly drew attention inside the arena.
During a timeout, Chicago Sky guard Natasha Cloud approached Kanter Freedom, and the two became involved in a heated verbal exchange. Security later escorted the former NBA player out of the arena.

Kanter Freedom subsequently explained that he had been celebrating a three-pointer and defended his presence at the game by saying he was there to stand up for women.
The incident added another chapter to the broader national debate over biological sex, gender identity, and the rules governing women’s athletics.
For years, sports organizations have faced growing pressure from athletes, activists, lawmakers, and fans over policies involving transgender participation. Some organizations have adopted detailed eligibility requirements involving hormone levels or transition timelines, while others have imposed restrictions based primarily on biological sex.
The WNBA, however, has largely avoided issuing a highly publicized and detailed policy specifically addressing transgender eligibility.
That makes the league’s reported rejection of Kanter Freedom and White particularly notable.
While the WNBA has characterized the declarations as attempts to manufacture controversy and mock the league, its decision nevertheless establishes a practical boundary: adult males cannot simply announce a female identity and expect automatic entry into the WNBA.
