The White House briefing room had an unexpected face behind the podium Thursday as Vice President JD Vance temporarily stepped into the role normally occupied by the press secretary.
With former Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt officially gone from the administration, President Donald Trump has yet to announce a permanent successor. In the meantime, senior officials are expected to rotate through the briefing room and handle questions from reporters.
Vance’s appearance immediately drew attention, particularly because the vice president used the briefing to spotlight several major priorities of the Trump administration.
One of the first issues he addressed was the administration’s crackdown on fraudulent commercial driver’s license operations, which officials say have put unqualified drivers behind the wheel of massive commercial vehicles.
