For years, Americans have been told that fast food kitchens run like finely tuned machines — grills sizzling, fries crackling in hot oil, milkshakes spinning in stainless steel mixers.

But this week, one major burger chain admitted something that left customers blinking at their screens.
Steak ‘n Shake quietly revealed that it has been using microwaves in its restaurants — and not just in a few locations. The Indianapolis-based chain confirmed it will remove every microwave from all 390 of its stores by April 15.
The company delivered the news bluntly on X: “Quality restaurants don’t need microwaves.”
That single sentence triggered a tidal wave of reactions.
Many loyal customers said they had no idea microwaves were part of the operation in the first place.
