California Democrat Maxine Waters, one of the most vocal progressives in Congress, is once again under fire—this time for her campaign’s serious violations of federal election law. The Federal Election Commission (FEC) has slapped Waters’ campaign with a hefty $68,000 fine after uncovering multiple breaches tied to her 2020 re-election bid.
The investigation focused on Waters’ campaign group, Citizens for Waters, which the FEC found guilty of several campaign finance violations. Among the infractions: accepting illegal contributions, failing to properly disclose donations and expenditures, and making banned cash payments over legal limits.
According to FEC documents, the committee was cited for “failing to accurately report receipts and disbursements in calendar year 2020,” “knowingly accepting excessive contributions,” and “making prohibited cash disbursements.”
In a legally binding agreement meant to keep the case out of court, Waters’ committee agreed to the civil penalty and additional corrective action. The campaign must now send its treasurer to an FEC-approved training session for political committees.
“Respondent shall submit evidence of the required registration and attendance at such event to the Commission,” the agreement reads.
