The question of what caused the Civil War was posed to Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley, the former governor of South Carolina, the first state to separate as a slave state, on Wednesday night during a town hall in Berlin, New Hampshire. Haley spoke on the topic of defending individual liberties against the government (which would have been a great response to a different question). Haley didn’t bring up slavery in her response, which startled her interlocutor. Haley said, “Well, what do you want me to say about slavery?” when she was called upon, then she answered another question.

Transcript:
Q: “Thank you, Ambassador. Please, um, what was the cause of the United States Civil War?”
Haley: (Pauses) “Well, don’t come with an easy question or anything. I think the cause of the Civil War was basically how government was going to run. The freedoms and what people could and couldn’t do. What do you think the cause of the Civil War was?”
Q: “I’m not running for president. I, I, I wanted to hear your view on the cause of the Civil War.
Haley: “I mean, I think it always comes down to the role of government, and what the rights of the people are. And we, I will always stand by the fact that I think government was intended to secure the rights and freedoms of the people. It was never meant to be all things to all people. Government doesn’t need to tell you how to live your life. They don’t need to tell you what you can and can’t do. They don’t need to be a part of your life. They need to make sure that you have freedom. We need to have capitalism. We need to have economic freedom. We need to make sure that we do all things so that individuals have the liberties so that they can have freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom to do or be anything they want to be without government getting in the way.”
Q: “Thank you. In the, in the year 2023, it’s astonishing to me that you answer that question without mentioning the word slavery.”
Haley: “What do you want me to say about slavery?”
Q: “No problem. You’ve answered my question, thank you.”
Haley: “Next question.”
(Smattering of applause.)

A pool video that WMUR-TV uploaded:
South Carolina took a daring step on December 20, 1860, that would change the course of history. Just four days later, on December 24, the state formally announced its independence from the Union. The controversial subject of slavery took center stage as the motivation behind this historic ruling, as stated in a forceful declaration. Come along with us as we explore the battles for liberty and the redefinition of a country.
On April 26, 1852, the people of South Carolina voted to leave the Union on the grounds that the federal government had repeatedly violated the US Constitution and infringed upon state rights. But they decided to wait to use this privilege because they respected the views of other states that continued to own slaves. Since then, these intrusions have only become worse, and exercising more restraint is now immoral.
In order to accomplish these objectives, a federal government was founded, in which every State was treated equally and given autonomous authority over its own institutions. By giving free people some political rights, enabling them to be represented in government, and levying direct taxes on them for three-fifths of their slaves, the right to possess slaves was acknowledged. It also included guaranteeing the return of runaway slaves and allowing the entry of slaves for a restricted time.
We thus pronounce that the non-slaveholding States’ acts have weakened the Government and defeated the purpose for which it was established. Fifteen of these States have ignored the property rights guaranteed by the Constitution, taking it upon themselves to assess our domestic actions. They have deemed the practice of slavery to be unethical and permitted the formation of groups that seek to disturb the quiet and pilfer the belongings of residents of neighboring States. Thousands of our slaves have been actively urged and helped to escape by them, and those who are still in slavery have been inspired to revolt by agents, literature, and pictures.
This movement has been growing gradually for 25 years, and it has now succeeded in securing the support of the common government. A sectional group, according to the Constitution’s formalities, has discovered a way to undermine the Constitution itself in the Executive Department Article. A boundary has been established between the states that makes up the Union, and every state to the north of it has joined to elect a man with anti-slavery views and goals to the post of President of the joined States. Because of his declaration that “Government cannot endure permanently half slave, half free,” and that the public mind must rest in the assumption that slavery is on the verge of final extinction, he is to be entrusted with the management of the common government.
By giving citizenship to people who are legally ineligible, unconstitutional sectional alliances have been established, and their votes have been utilized to forward a divisive and dangerous agenda that jeopardizes the security and values of the South.
On March 4th, be ready for a takeover that will change the game! This party is adamant about making the courts sectional and keeping the South out of our shared area. They have gone so far as to declare war on slavery and promise to keep fighting until it is outlawed nationwide.
States’ equal rights will be sacrificed in order to preserve the promises made by the Constitution. The Federal Government will become their enemy, robbing slaveholding states of their independence and self-defense.
Divisions and confrontations will only make the situation worse, and there is little chance of a resolution since the Northern public has associated a serious political error with an even more erroneous religious conviction.
South Carolina affirms its position as a distinct and independent state and announces its independence from the Union. We possess the power to declare war, negotiate peace, form coalitions, carry out trade, and enjoy all the liberties accorded to a sovereign state.
Discover the dramatic beginning of the Civil War on April 12, 1861, when Confederate forces capture government Fort Sumter in South Carolina with great victory.
Haley did not address the developing scandal in a post following the town hall, writing instead, “A little bad weather isn’t going to stop us! Berlin, thank you for a great night on stop one of five in New Hampshire!”

Why would anyone waste a candidates time with asking a question about the Civil War? The person said she wanted her opinion. No. High school history class should have given this person the information they needed and it is not opinion. Causes of any war are documented by historians. They are the experts. If you need the causes, get a good American history book and read it, take an American history class at a nearby college, or read articles on the History Channel website: https://www.history.com/news/civil-war-causes-issues
