The vice president’s attempt to continue was fraught with uncertainty. “And we know… we will do it,” she continued, before once again getting caught in a loop. “This is going to be a very tight race until the very end. This is going to be a very tight race until the very end. And we are the underdog, and we know we have some hard work ahead.”
Critics quickly seized on the uncomfortable pause and repetition as evidence of Harris’ lack of competence under pressure. As gun rights activist Colion Noir noted in an X (formerly Twitter) post: “Look, I don’t care what your stance on @realDonaldTrump is—set that aside. Just look at Kamala Harris objectively. She’s wholly incompetent to be President. If you can’t handle a speech when the teleprompter goes down, you don’t have what it takes to lead the United States.”
Conservative radio host Rich Zeoli also joined in the chorus of criticism, sarcastically commenting on Harris’ speech blunder: “When the teleprompter goes out, Kamala Harris just keep repeating 32 days and 32 seconds feels like 32 days for everyone in attendance.”
The timing of this latest gaffe couldn’t be worse for Harris and the Democratic Party. As strategists grow increasingly concerned about the campaign’s minimal media visibility, the pressure on Harris to engage voters more effectively is mounting. According to a recent Politico report, many within the Democratic Party are alarmed by the Harris-Walz campaign’s lack of media outreach and visibility. With only a handful of carefully curated interviews under her belt, Harris has left many wondering whether she’s up to the challenge of facing a relentless opponent like Donald Trump, who remains omnipresent across media platforms.
David Axelrod, a seasoned Democratic strategist who played a pivotal role in Barack Obama’s 2008 victory, echoed these concerns. “There’s a time at which you just have to barnstorm these battlegrounds,” Axelrod said. “These races are decathlons, and there are a lot of events, and you have to do all of them because people want to test you.”

Axelrod added, “It’s the most difficult oral exam on the planet for the most difficult job, and part of that is just that spontaneous — town halls, all kinds of interviews, and not just friendly interviews. OTRs where you interact in a substantive way with people, all of those things are valuable. And I would be doing them if I were her.”
As the campaign season intensifies, Harris will undoubtedly face increased scrutiny not just from Republicans but also from within her own party. With expectations of media engagement growing, the vice president’s ability to think on her feet will be critical in the weeks leading up to Election Day.
Whether this teleprompter failure was just a blip or a sign of deeper vulnerabilities in Harris’ ability to lead is a question that remains to be answered. One thing is certain: her performance in Michigan has given critics plenty of ammunition as the election approaches.
