Fils was addressing the U.N., passionately demanding reparations and global recognition for what he described as Haiti’s long history of injustice. However, a lighthearted moment soon turned his serious speech into a viral spectacle.

As Fils laid out Haiti’s grievances, calling for reparations and justice, he lamented the negative impacts of colonialism on his country. “Haiti is today the greatest victim of a historical injustice, which has not only delayed our development but saddled our people with a burden,” he stated. However, the somber tone of his speech was abruptly interrupted when Fils attempted to take a sip of water. Instead of pouring water into the glass provided, he mistakenly took a large gulp directly from the pitcher, resulting in an embarrassing spill that drenched him in front of global leaders. The incident was instantly caught on camera, and videos of the mishap quickly circulated on social media.
