Washington Wants Your Fingerprints to Buy a Gun!

Washington residents who want to purchase a firearm will soon face a new set of requirements, including fingerprint collection, mandatory safety training and a state-issued permit. The changes are scheduled to take effect May 1, 2027, under legislation signed by Democratic Gov. Bob Ferguson.

For gun owners and Second Amendment advocates, the new system raises a fundamental question: How far can the government go in regulating access to a constitutional right before the requirements themselves become a barrier?

House Bill 1163, which Washington lawmakers approved during the 2025 legislative session, establishes a permit-to-purchase system administered by the Washington State Patrol. The legislation became law on May 20, 2025, but the main permit requirements will not take effect until 2027.

Critics argue that the added steps and expenses could make buying a firearm more difficult, particularly for residents with limited financial resources. Supporters of the legislation, meanwhile, have defended the new requirements as part of a broader effort to strengthen firearm safety.
