Walz’s comment is striking. If he meant a pattern of disturbed, often gender-confused individuals targeting Christians and conservatives, he might have a point. But of course, that was not the narrative he was pushing.
Mayor Jacob Frey quickly chimed in, echoing the same anti-gun talking points: “We’ve got more guns in this country than we have people. And it’s on all of us to recognize the truth and the reality that we can’t just say this shouldn’t happen again and then allow it to happen again.”
Yet the reality is very different. This wasn’t a gun that decided to open fire on a Catholic school. It was a person — a transgender, radicalized individual with hatred for faith and conservatives. Instead of acknowledging that, Frey immediately deflected.
In fact, Frey later went on CNN and doubled down: “Those who use this as an opportunity to villainize our trans community or any community has lost touch with a common humanity.” Translation: don’t you dare point out the uncomfortable pattern of transgender shooters targeting Christians and conservatives.
But the deeper scandal here isn’t just the media’s selective outrage. Gov. Walz himself had multiple chances to protect these children — and he refused.
For two years, the Minnesota Catholic Conference pleaded with Walz to include Catholic, Jewish, Muslim, and other nonpublic schools in state security programs that already protect public schools. Their 2023 letter warned: “There are approximately 72,000 students enrolled in Independent, Catholic, Jewish, Christian and Muslim nonpublic schools in our state… Our schools are under attack.”
The bishops specifically asked Walz to approve $50 million for a Building and Cyber Security Grant Program that would cover all schools. They noted that leaving out religious schools was “a discriminatory act against our students.”
This wasn’t the first time. In 2022, the bishops asked Walz to call a special session to ensure funding for school safety across the board. The plan even had bipartisan support. Walz refused.
Meanwhile, Minnesota was swimming in a $17.6 billion budget surplus. There was plenty of money to protect vulnerable students. But Walz had other priorities — like signing legislation to make Minnesota a “trans refuge state” and currying favor with teachers’ unions that despise funding nonpublic schools.
The outcome? No funding for Catholic schools. No protection for children praying at Mass. And now, two young lives lost.
Walz’s office tried to spin the tragedy by claiming he had signed “millions in funding for school safety.” But the National Catholic Register confirmed that none of that funding applied to nonpublic schools. Fact-check: False.
Jason Adkins of the Minnesota Catholic Conference put it plainly: “It was raised in discussions between the bishops and Gov. Walz, and he communicated his belief that people should feel safe in their schools and places of worship. But the appropriation was not created.”
In other words, Walz talked a big game, then left Catholic and other nonpublic schools defenseless.
And now, instead of acknowledging that failure, Democrats are again hiding behind the tired talking point: blame the gun.
The truth is simple: if Walz had approved security funding that Catholic leaders begged for, there may have been officers or safeguards in place to stop this tragedy. Instead, he chose politics over protection.
That decision was deadly. And now, two children are gone forever.
The American people deserve leaders who will protect kids, not pander to special interests. But in Minnesota, as in so many other blue states, Democratic leaders would rather strip away your Second Amendment rights than admit their own negligence cost lives.
