On Wednesday, top Minnesota Democrats, including Representative Ilhan Omar and Governor Tim Walz, publicly condemned an ICE officer’s deadly shooting in Minneapolis. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS), however, defended its agents, saying the fatal incident was “the direct consequence of constant attacks and demonization of our officers by sanctuary politicians,” citing threats to the officer’s life.
In a statement posted on X, Governor Walz, already under scrutiny from federal fraud investigations, dismissed DHS’s explanation. “I’ve seen the video. Don’t believe this propaganda machine. The state will ensure there is a full, fair, and expeditious investigation to ensure accountability and justice,” he wrote.
Representative Omar also weighed in, criticizing ICE’s presence in her city. “ICE must stop terrorizing our communities and leave our city,” she said, echoing a familiar refrain from immigration advocates.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey joined the call for ICE to exit the city, delivering a fiery message at a press conference.
