A Michigan woman, whom we will refer to as “Gina,” is being hailed as a hero after using her quick thinking to record an interaction that may have uncovered a fraudulent voter registration effort. Gina was approached by a canvasser who attempted to convince her to register to vote in two different counties, a felony under Michigan law.
On October 1, 2024, Gina, a resident of Oakland County, was shopping with a friend at Joe Randazzo’s Fruit & Vegetable Market in Dearborn Heights, MI. As she exited the store, a woman holding a clipboard approached her, asking if she was registered to vote. Gina responded that she was already registered in Oakland County, but the woman insisted, “It doesn’t matter; you can vote down here too.”

Recognizing the potential for fraud, Gina discreetly activated a voice recording app on her phone and engaged in conversation with the canvasser. The woman urged her to fill out a voter registration form, despite her already being registered elsewhere, and pushed for her to complete a change of address form.
