“The suspect got out of the vehicle, approached the two victims, [and] shot both victims” in broad daylight, he said.

Witnesses described panic erupting around the courthouse as gunfire rang out near one of the busiest government buildings in the city. Deputies and officers flooded the area within seconds, placing the courthouse on lockdown as frightened attorneys, court staff, and civilians scrambled for safety.

Video from the scene captured White being escorted away in handcuffs after officers swarmed the area and secured the suspect.

Despite the violent nature of the attack, authorities said both attorneys survived the shooting and were listed in stable condition Friday evening. Their injuries have not yet been fully disclosed.

The law firm representing the victims released a somber statement after the attack, expressing shock over the incident.

“We cannot adequately express our deep sadness and concern. The safety and well-being of our people is our highest priority.”

The Town of Rolesville also addressed the violence, emphasizing its longstanding relationship with the legal team involved in the case.

“We are saddened to learn that two attorneys representing the Town of Rolesville in a civil matter were shot outside the Wake County Courthouse this morning. Fox Rothschild has represented the Town of Rolesville for decades, and while they are not employees of the Town, this incident is deeply disturbing.”

The courthouse shooting has reignited concerns about security around legal proceedings, especially in emotionally charged civil and criminal cases involving law enforcement.

One witness inside the courthouse said tensions were already building before shots were fired. According to reports, the witness heard shouting moments before “multiple shots” echoed outside the building, prompting an immediate emergency response from sheriff’s deputies.

Another attorney practicing in the courthouse voiced concern that increasingly hostile confrontations inside courtrooms may now carry deadly consequences outside the building.

More from WRAL:

“Now, when you hear those threats, or you see someone arguing out in the lobby with their lawyer, which that does happen a lot, you’ve got to wonder, are they going to run out to their car and wait for that lawyer to walk out of the courthouse?” defense attorney Lee Turner said.

The case that allegedly sparked the violence centers around officer-worn body camera footage connected to the death of White’s mother. Details surrounding the underlying lawsuit remain limited, but the courtroom dispute had reportedly become heated before White exited the courthouse.

Investigators are now working to determine whether the shooting was premeditated and whether additional charges may follow.

The incident has sent shockwaves through North Carolina’s legal community, where attorneys and courthouse personnel are increasingly worried about escalating hostility tied to politically charged and emotionally explosive cases involving police departments.

For many observers, Friday’s attack crossed a chilling new line: a courtroom disagreement allegedly turning into an attempted execution outside the courthouse doors.
