Twitter Exec Pushed To Ban M. Gaetz’s Account

Despite earlier messaging indicating that it did not comply with company policies, Twitter’s former Trust and Safety head, Yoel Roth, attempted to promote the banning of Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz from using their platform in the wake of the January 6 Capitol riots. The revelations are part of Michael Shellenberger’s “Twitter Files” publication which was released as a result of CEO Elon Musk’s initiative.

On January 7th, 2021 an anonymous employee posed a query to Roth concerning the validity of accusations made by Congressman Gaetz around Antifa involvement in Capitol protests.

Simultaneously another named individual asked Twitter take fast action against similar statements. In reply Roth stated that personnel were already working on it — suggesting they had taken steps toward holding truthfulness and accountability to account across their platform.

In a discussion reported by Shellenberger, Roth argued the case for removaling an object deemed to be “inciting violence.” While its placement was uncertain, Gadde showed agreement on this direction.

Despite considering a ban, Gaetz’s account ultimately remained active despite internal discussions.

With only seven hours to spare, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey was preparing to break the news that Donald Trump’s tweets would now be held accountable and face suspension if they violated policy.

This change in strategy heralded a new era of public interest exceptions that allowed people all over the world to interact with their elected officials on pressing issues by understanding when language used has crossed the line.

In June 2021, Rep. Gaetz brazenly asked whether Antifa should be hunted down and handled like terrorists in the Middle East – a statement that quickly received censure from Twitter for glorifying violence. Despite being subject to public-interest labeling, users can still quote tweet it on the platform today.

This Tweet has been determined to be in the public’s interest despite breaking Twitter’s rules and is still viewable.

Despite being contacted, neither Twitter nor Rep. Gaetz’s office could offer The Daily Caller News Foundation a response.
