At least once this year, Trump and Gabbard, the former Democratic representative from Hawaii, had a face-to-face meeting. Even if they have different political philosophies, there are instances when their pasts collide, exposing a complicated and occasionally helpful interaction.
Hawaii-born former Democratic congresswoman Gabbard is well-known within her party for taking unusual stances, particularly on foreign affairs. She has been outspoken in her criticism of the Democratic establishment throughout her career, especially when it comes to issues of war and peace.
Sometimes, Gabbard’s opposition to “regime change wars” and her doubts about American military involvement overseas have echoed Trump’s complaints about never-ending foreign wars. Still, they originate from different viewpoints and justifications.
Gabbard was one of the few Democrats that met with Trump after he took office in November 2016. The discussion, which centered on Syria and US policy, demonstrated Gabbard’s bipartisanship, despite criticism from certain members of her own party.
