Alejandro Mayorkas, the secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, was impeached by the US House of Representatives by a slim margin of 214–213.
Reps. Ken Buck (CO), Mike Gallagher (WI), and Tom McClintock (CA) were among the three House Republicans who crossed party lines to reject the legislation. A second vote was taken a week later. Rep. Blake Moore (R-UT) also changed his vote at the last minute to “no,” allowing him to take part in the impeachment vote once more.
Due to medical treatments, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) was not present for the preceding vote. But once he returned on Monday, his vote proved crucial, deciding the measure’s success by a single vote.

Reps. Buck, Gallagher, and McClintock joined Democrats in voting “no” on Monday to reaffirm their opposition. Gallagher, who had already said he would not run for reelection after receiving a lot of criticism for his earlier vote, joined Buck, who had also announced his retirement.
Similar to President Ulysses S. Grant’s Secretary of War William Belknap, Mayorkas becomes the first cabinet member to be impeached since 1876. But since the Democrats control the Senate, it is unlikely that he would be found guilty and removed from office, thus the measure is mostly symbolic.
The impeachment process was completed, according to a statement from DHS spokesperson Mia Ehrenberg. “without a shred of evidence or legitimate Constitutional grounds.”
“House Republicans will be remembered by history for trampling on the Constitution for political gain rather than working to solve the serious challenges at our border,” Ehrenberg said.
The DHS secretary’s impeachment has been a long-standing goal of House Republicans due to the southern border problem. Over 8 million unlawful interactions have happened along the southern border since Mayorkas took office in February 2021—a sharp increase over the Trump administration. In 2022 and 2023, illegal border crossings shattered record after record, and 2024 is expected to break even more.
