President Donald Trump has signed a sweeping new executive order that could dramatically reshape how America handles mental health treatment—especially for veterans—while also continuing his push for tighter election safeguards across the country.
The order, signed Saturday, directs the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to accelerate its review process for certain psychedelic-based therapies that have already been flagged as “breakthrough treatments.” The goal is simple but urgent: get promising therapies into the hands of patients faster, particularly those who have served in the military and are battling severe mental health challenges.
Trump framed the move as long overdue, pointing to years of stalled progress despite encouraging research.
“The executive order I’m signing, we’re actually signing the executive order today, is really a moment,” Trump said. “These treatments are currently in the advanced stages of clinical trials to ensure that they’re both safe and effective for the American patients.”
The administration says the initiative is focused on cutting through red tape that has historically slowed medical innovation. By improving coordination between federal agencies like the FDA and the Department of Veterans Affairs, the order aims to streamline approvals, enhance data sharing, and fast-track rescheduling of psychedelic compounds once they receive official clearance.
