“The arrest in the U.K. was fantastic,” Trump said. “Working with Britain it was an amazing job. We had [the suspects] under investigation. They were looking to do big damage to our fort.”
Trump added: “We had them under view for a long time and we got them.”
The comments offer an indication that the arrests were not simply the result of officers encountering suspicious vehicles by chance. According to Trump, the suspects had already been under scrutiny as authorities worked to determine what they were allegedly planning.
British officials, however, have emphasized that the investigation remains in its early stages.
“We are in the early stages of an investigation, and five men remain in custody,” said Vicki Evans, the Metropolitan Police’s senior national coordinator for counterterrorism policing.
The circumstances surrounding the three vehicles triggered an extensive security response.
Authorities established a large cordon around the vehicles while British Army explosive ordnance disposal specialists examined them. Bomb-disposal equipment, including a robot, was deployed as investigators worked to determine whether the vehicles or their contents posed an immediate threat.
Dozens of nearby homes were also evacuated as a precaution. Reports indicated that roughly 85 households in the surrounding area were temporarily moved while the examination continued.
The location of the arrests has added particular significance to the investigation.
RAF Fairford is a British-owned facility operated by the United States under a longstanding arrangement and is home to U.S. Air Force personnel. The installation has been used by American bombers during military operations against Iranian targets.
That connection comes as tensions surrounding the conflict with Iran remain high.
British authorities have not publicly said that the five suspects were acting on behalf of Iran, and investigators have not released their nationalities or identities. Reports have indicated that counterterrorism officials are examining whether there could be an Iranian connection, but that remains an investigative question rather than an established fact.
No group has publicly claimed responsibility for the alleged plot.
The arrests nonetheless underscore the heightened security environment surrounding U.S.-linked military facilities as American operations in the region continue.
The U.S. Embassy in Britain subsequently issued a security alert reminding Americans that British authorities currently assess the terrorism threat in the country as severe. The embassy also warned that U.S.-associated facilities, organizations and gatherings could face elevated risks.
For now, British investigators are continuing to examine the vehicles and gather evidence while the five men remain in custody.
Trump’s remarks suggest U.S. authorities were closely involved with their British counterparts before the arrests. British officials have not yet released additional details about what investigators believe the suspects intended to do or whether an attack was imminent.
What is clear is that the incident prompted a major counterterrorism response around a facility directly connected to U.S. military operations.
And with the investigation still developing, authorities will now be focused on determining exactly who the suspects are, what they allegedly intended to accomplish and whether anyone else was involved.
