Texas has long been a major source of Republican fundraising, and Trump is expected to use the trip to help expand the party’s already substantial financial advantage. The president and his political allies are sitting on a massive war chest as Democrats face growing pressure to keep up.
Trump recently suggested that his political fundraising operation has accumulated an extraordinary amount of money that could soon be directed toward key Republican campaigns.
“Well, I’ve raised a lot, and nobody knows what it is, but I will tell you it’s about $850 million,” Trump said before boarding Air Force One to fly to South Carolina.
The president made clear that he intends to put those resources to work for candidates he believes can help Republicans retain control of Congress.
“I’ll be spending a lot of that money for — and my own money — but I’ll be spending a lot of that money for candidates that I think are good, Republican candidates,” Trump assured reporters.
“We’re in very good shape,” he added, per The Hill.
Trump’s financial strength could become an increasingly important factor as Republicans face competitive races across the country. While some election forecasters currently give Democrats an advantage in the battle for the House, Republicans continue to hold a narrow edge in the fight for the Senate.
The political environment has also become more complicated for the GOP. Recent polling has shown Democrats gaining momentum in some contests, while Trump’s approval numbers and the political fallout surrounding the war with Iran have created additional challenges heading into November.
At the same time, Republicans have reason to be skeptical of early polling. Pollsters have repeatedly missed the mark in recent election cycles, with some surveys showing Democratic candidates holding large leads that failed to materialize on Election Day.
Trump and his advisers appear confident that money, organization, and direct presidential involvement can help offset those challenges.
One of the biggest questions has been when Trump’s powerful outside political organizations will begin spending heavily. MAGA Inc., the pro-Trump super PAC that played a significant role during his successful 2024 campaign, remains one of the most influential political groups on the Republican side.
Trump previously told Punchbowl News that he has broad discretion over how the group’s resources can be used.
“I’m going to help Republicans,” he said.
Despite the size of its financial reserves, MAGA Inc. had not yet reported spending money during June or July, leading some Republicans to privately question when the organization would begin deploying its resources in competitive races.
Those concerns may soon be answered.
James Blair, a senior Trump political adviser who oversees MAGA Inc., has said that the president is preparing to make a major financial commitment to the midterm effort.
“He cares deeply about the party winning and anything he can do to support that he is going to do and is already doing,” Blair said on “The Sean Spicer Show” in June.
Blair also indicated that the PAC’s money would begin moving in the near future, saying it would be “very soon.”
After Thursday’s political fundraising event, Trump will shift from campaign politics to one of America’s most celebrated institutions.
On Friday, the president is scheduled to appear at NASA’s Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center in Houston for a ceremony honoring three American astronauts from the Artemis II mission.
Trump is expected to award the Congressional Space Medal of Honor to Commander Reid Wiseman, Pilot Victor Glover, and Mission Specialist Christina Koch following their historic lunar fly-by mission earlier this year. NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman is also expected to participate in the ceremony.
The Congressional Space Medal of Honor is one of the nation’s most prestigious recognitions for astronauts who have made exceptional contributions to space exploration.
Trump previously spoke with the Artemis II crew during their mission and later welcomed them to the White House after their return.
The Texas trip will mark Trump’s third visit to the state during his current presidency. Earlier stops included a visit to the Kerrville area following devastating flooding and a separate trip to Corpus Christi.
By combining a major Republican fundraising event with a high-profile ceremony celebrating American achievement in space, Trump’s Houston visit will showcase both the political and presidential sides of his agenda.
With control of Congress hanging in the balance, the president’s massive fundraising network could soon become a decisive force in competitive races across the country. And if Trump follows through on his promise to unleash hundreds of millions of dollars behind Republican candidates, the political battle heading into November may be only beginning.
