A growing storm is forming on Capitol Hill — and this time, Republicans are being urged to take decisive action before Democrats drag the country into another self-inflicted crisis. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent made that crystal clear during his appearance on NBC’s Meet The Press on Sunday, telling host Kristen Welker that Senate Republicans are officially “on notice” if Democrats push the government to the brink again in the coming weeks.
Bessent’s warning didn’t come out of thin air. It followed a month of chaos after President Trump urged Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) to dismantle the filibuster during the Democrat-driven shutdown. The procedural hurdle requires 60 votes instead of a simple majority — a tool Democrats have repeatedly used to block Republican priorities. But Thune shrugged off the call.
“I don’t doubt that he could have some sway with members. But I know where the math is on this issue in the Senate, and … it’s just not happening,” Thune said on November 3.
