President Donald Trump used one of the world’s biggest sporting events to raise an issue that has become increasingly frustrating for many Americans living near the northern border: Canada’s wildfire smoke.
During Sunday’s FIFA World Cup final, Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney were seated together in a private suite, giving the two leaders an opportunity to speak face-to-face. According to Trump, the discussion turned to the massive wildfire smoke that has repeatedly drifted into the United States, creating hazardous air quality and disrupting daily life across several states.
The issue has become especially significant for communities in the Midwest after multiple summers of heavy smoke blanketed cities, triggered health alerts, and affected businesses.
