This shocking line of questioning, and Kent’s equally blunt responses, come amid growing evidence that federal agencies had more than a passive role in the events that unfolded at the Capitol.
Kent pointed to damning footage obtained by January 6 defendant Will Pope, which appears to show undercover D.C. police officers embedded in the crowd, encouraging protesters to storm past barricades and scale walls to access the Capitol. “Body camera footage obtained by former January 6 defendant Will Pope shows multiple undercover officers with the D.C. Metropolitan Police encouraging protesters to climb over barricades and walls in order to enter the Capitol complex,” Kent noted.
He also referenced a bizarre moment when MPD bike officers detained four armed men in plainclothes—who later turned out to be law enforcement agents. One of the more chilling moments in the video library, Kent said, shows a man calmly walking behind Ashli Babbitt before she was fatally shot, predicting, “someone will get shot.”
At the federal level, former FBI Washington Field Office chief Steven D’Antuono testified to Congress that the bureau had so many informants at the Capitol that it lost track of them. The Washington office even had to contact FBI headquarters for help identifying which informants were present that day.
“We started getting responses back,” D’Antuono said, confirming that multiple field offices had assets embedded within the crowd. In fact, one informant from Kansas City was allegedly in direct contact with his FBI handler as protesters surged toward the Capitol. “While they were in the crowd, I think, saying that they were going in,” D’Antuono recalled.
Kent didn’t mince words when addressing the scope of the problem: “So we’ve already identified that there were multiple confidential human informants ran by the FBI and other law enforcement agencies that were present in the crowd that day, directing, removing barriers, those types of things. This has been investigated widely.”
He added that federal law enforcement agencies tried to bury the fact that their informants were actively embedded in the January 6 crowd. “The FBI and other elements of the law enforcement apparatus attempted to suppress the fact that there was undercover confidential human informants that were part of these different groups,” he said.
Kent also confirmed the intelligence community had prior knowledge that violence was likely on January 6. “We also had intelligence leading up to January 6th that there was going to be violence that day so that speaks to some degree of intelligence infiltration into some of these groups.”
When asked if the Washington Field Office was directly involved in planning the chaos, Kent said simply: “It’s being looked into.”

Kelly wasn’t done. He asked whether Kent believed that undercover federal assets may have helped plan the violent scenes on Capitol Hill. Kent dropped yet another bombshell, tying the FBI’s actions on January 6 to a similar scandal involving a foiled kidnapping plot against Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer.
“If you look at who was running the Washington field office during January 6th, it was Steven D’Antuono. He was also running the field office in Michigan, where many of the defendants were let go after they were accused of attempting to kidnap the governor, because the vast majority of them were undercover FBI confidential informants,” Kent stated.
His conclusion was clear: “So unfortunately, this behavior does happen by members of law enforcement and the intelligence community, and it’s incumbent upon us to make sure that we are transparent with the American people.”
With this testimony now public, the question isn’t whether federal agents were present—it’s whether they were pulling the strings.
