President Donald Trump has rejected Iran’s latest attempt to secure a temporary ceasefire, signaling that Washington is not prepared to ease its pressure campaign against Tehran simply to obtain a short-term pause in the conflict.
The Wall Street Journal reported Friday that Trump turned down an Iranian proposal centered on a seven-day ceasefire and reopening the Strait of Hormuz, citing U.S. officials familiar with the discussions. The Journal also reported that Trump has told aides he believes renewed strikes against Iran could eventually become necessary.
The development comes as Tehran searches for a diplomatic path out of a confrontation that has severely disrupted shipping and placed enormous pressure on Iran’s economy.
