Although Trump has publicly complimented both Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio in recent months, the reported private comments have intensified speculation over who the president sees as the future leader of the Republican Party. If accurate, the remarks represent Trump’s clearest indication yet that he views Vance as the GOP’s leading contender for the White House in 2028.
The conversation comes as Vance continues to lead many early Republican presidential polls. Rubio, meanwhile, has repeatedly stated that he would support Vance should the vice president decide to launch a presidential campaign. Even so, Trump’s frequent praise of Rubio has ensured that the secretary of state’s name remains part of the ongoing discussion about the party’s future.
Trump once again praised his vice president during a donor event in Las Vegas on Wednesday, highlighting Vance’s efforts on one of the administration’s priorities.
“The war on fraud led by our great Vice President JD Vance: He’s doing a great job,” Trump told attendees.
Despite growing speculation surrounding a possible 2028 campaign, Vance has consistently emphasized that his current focus remains on carrying out President Trump’s agenda rather than discussing his own political future.
“The president runs this administration: He is the very top of the administration; he makes orders,” Vance said during an interview Wednesday on “The Ingraham Angle.” “We, of course, have debates and conversations about what exactly we should do, but when the president of the United States makes a decision, we’re unified in this administration in carrying out that mission.”
While Vance has attracted much of the attention surrounding the next presidential race, Trump has continued to heap praise on Rubio for his work as America’s top diplomat. The president has credited Rubio with helping oversee negotiations involving Venezuela, Cuba, and the Middle East while also managing additional responsibilities within the administration.
Earlier this year, Trump went so far as to predict that Rubio would become “the greatest secretary of state in history.”
The president has also floated the possibility of a future Vance-Rubio presidential ticket, describing the combination as “unstoppable.” However, Trump has never clarified which of the two Republicans would lead such a ticket.
Trump has previously hinted that Vance would be the logical successor simply because he currently serves as vice president. Last year, the president remarked that Vance was “most likely” his successor because “in all fairness, he’s the vice president.”
Speculation surrounding the 2028 election has only intensified in recent months. During last month’s rescheduled White House Correspondents Dinner, Trump joked about seeking a fourth term while displaying Trump 2028 merchandise, fueling even more discussion about the Republican Party’s future leadership.
Although Vance has repeatedly declined to discuss any presidential ambitions publicly, reports indicate that he has quietly assembled advisers who are widely expected to serve as the foundation of a national campaign should he choose to run after the midterm elections.
Rubio, by comparison, has not built a similar political organization and has publicly maintained that he would support a Vance presidential campaign if one materializes.
Beyond his growing political profile, Vance has also expanded his influence within the Republican Party through his fundraising efforts. Serving as finance chairman of the Republican National Committee, he has helped oversee a fundraising operation that surpassed $128 million in the committee’s June filing with the Federal Election Commission.
“Vice President Vance has been a fundraising powerhouse for the RNC, supercharging our war chest as we head into the midterms,” RNC Chair Joe Gruters told Fox News Digital in a statement. “He’s held record-breaking events across the country and brought new and longtime donors together with his ability to connect every corner of the America First movement.
“As we prepare to protect and expand our Republican majorities, Vice President Vance will be a driving force behind the resources, energy, and momentum needed to win.”
At the same time, reports suggest that efforts by some Republican donors to elevate Rubio’s national profile have frustrated individuals close to Trump, who reportedly view Vance as the natural heir to the president’s political movement.
One Republican operative familiar with Trump’s political circle echoed that sentiment earlier this year.
“Vice President Vance is the future of the Republican Party, and Marco Rubio is one of his closest friends in the administration,” the operative said.
“The divisive stories from some donors trying to cause chaos are not helpful,” the operative emphasized.
With more than two years remaining before the next presidential election cycle begins in earnest, the Republican field is still taking shape. However, the latest reports and public statements have only strengthened the perception that JD Vance currently occupies the strongest position among potential GOP contenders, while Marco Rubio remains an influential figure whose support for the vice president could further solidify party unity if Vance ultimately enters the race.
