Trump Just Gave Her a SAVAGE Nickname!

The move does not require Canada, provincial governments or private organizations to adopt the new name. Instead, it applies to the terminology used by the U.S. federal government.

The timing of the decision added another layer of controversy.

The administration’s action came amid worsening tensions between Washington and Ottawa following the breakdown of trade negotiations. The United States subsequently imposed 50 percent tariffs on roughly $20 billion worth of Canadian goods, while Canada announced retaliatory measures of its own.

For Dingell, the Great Lakes dispute is about far more than a name.

The Michigan Democrat represents a district connected to the Great Lakes and argued that the waterways represent a shared American-Canadian resource. She announced plans for legislation alongside Reps. Tim Kennedy (D-NY) and Joe Morelle (D-NY) that would attempt to block Trump’s renaming effort.

The proposed legislation, dubbed the “Hands Off Our Great Lakes Act,” would declare the executive order ineffective, restore the federal name Lake Ontario and prevent future presidents from unilaterally changing the names of the Great Lakes.

Dingell also accused Trump of using the renaming controversy to divert attention from economic concerns.

She characterized the move as a “distraction” and argued that the president was creating political divisions while avoiding questions surrounding trade policy. She also took a jab at Trump’s Oval Office activities, saying that after finishing “arts and crafts in the Oval,” he should turn his attention toward the economy.

Trump did not let the criticism pass without a response.

On Saturday, the president turned his attention directly toward Dingell in a social media post, invoking his relationship with her late husband, former Rep. John Dingell.

“Upon his death, I gave Congressman John Dingell, the Royal Sendoff, MAXED OUT! His wife, Debbie Dingbat, called me and thanked me profusely, while crying uncontrollably. She couldn’t believe I would do such a nice thing,” the president wrote.

Trump then accused Dingell of repeatedly criticizing him despite what he viewed as his past loyalty toward her family.

“Since then, she says nothing but bad about your favorite President, ME! Every time I see that Third Rate Loser ripping me, I’m amazed, because I’m a loyal person, I don’t do things like that but, that’s OK — It’s Politics. However, it shouldn’t be that way!”

The president’s reference was tied to his treatment of John Dingell following the longtime congressman’s death in February 2019.

John Dingell had represented Michigan in Congress for decades and was, at the time of his death, the longest-serving member of Congress in American history. Trump ordered U.S. flags lowered to half-staff in his honor, a gesture that Trump clearly viewed as an example of respect extended to the Dingell family.

That history is now being invoked in an increasingly bitter political dispute.

The clash also highlights the broader political significance of the Great Lakes. The lakes form a major economic and transportation corridor connecting the United States and Canada, while communities along their shores depend heavily on shipping, manufacturing, tourism and commercial activity.

For Trump’s critics, changing the name of Lake Ontario is unnecessary political theater at a time when trade tensions could have significant consequences for businesses and consumers. For the Trump administration and its supporters, however, the president’s authority over federal terminology gives him room to make changes to how the U.S. government officially refers to geographic features.

The controversy is unlikely to end with the exchange between Trump and Dingell.

If the “Hands Off Our Great Lakes Act” advances, lawmakers could face another partisan battle over presidential authority, federal geographic naming policy and the longstanding relationship between the United States and Canada.

For now, what began as a change in federal terminology has become another highly charged confrontation between Trump and his Democratic critics — complete with personal attacks, competing claims over priorities and a very public reminder of the president’s past relationship with one of Michigan’s most influential political families.
