President Donald Trump is firing back at Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-MI) after the Michigan Democrat attacked his decision to rename Lake Ontario “Lake America” for federal purposes.
The dispute has turned an otherwise bureaucratic change to federal geographic records into another political showdown between Trump and congressional Democrats, with Trump taking particular aim at Dingell after she publicly mocked the administration’s decision.
On August 27, Trump signed an executive order instructing the Interior Department and the U.S. Board on Geographic Names to update the federal Geographic Names Information System. Under the order, federal maps, documents and official communications would refer to Lake Ontario as “Lake America.”
