The Biden administration’s controversial private semiconductor project has officially been dismantled, following allegations it was little more than a taxpayer-funded playground for political insiders.

On Monday, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick announced that the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) would now directly oversee the National Semiconductor Technology Center (NSTC). This move immediately terminates the role of the National Center for the Advancement of Semiconductor Technology, better known as Natcast—a group heavily tied to Biden-era appointees.

The CHIPS Act authorized billions in funding for semiconductor research, but Lutnick made clear that what the Biden administration built on top of that law was never required, nor was it legal. According to him, Natcast existed only to benefit Biden’s allies.

“From the very beginning Natcast served as a semiconductor slush fund that did nothing but line the pockets of Biden loyalists with American tax dollars,” Lutnick stated in a news release.
