Trump Just AXED Major Tariffs!

>> Continued From the Previous Page <<

According to Reuters, the rollback is likely to unleash a surge of coffee, beef, cocoa, and fruit that had been stalled in warehouses — shipments retailers were banking on in hopes that Trump would reverse the tariffs.

Judith Ganes, a commodities analyst and president of J. Ganes Consulting, said, “You can expect some thousand bags of Brazilian coffee that were sitting in bonded warehouses to start moving quickly to U.S. roasters.”

Bonded warehouses allow companies to store imports without paying taxes in advance — a strategic pause many took once Brazil was hit with Trump’s original tariffs. Retailers gambled. And as usual, they bet correctly on Trump acting in the interest of American consumers.

Brazil Praises the Move — And Claims Victory in Negotiations

Brazilian beef exporters wasted no time celebrating Trump’s decision, declaring it evidence that their government’s trade negotiators got the upper hand. The industry group ABIEC released a statement saying the move “shows the effectiveness of the trade negotiations” and promising to push even harder to expand their reach inside the U.S. market.

The thaw in U.S.-Brazil relations is notable, especially after months of tension between Trump and Brazil’s radically left President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Despite Thursday’s rollback, several Trump-imposed tariffs remain firmly in place — and more could be on the table depending on Brazil’s political behavior.

A History of Hard-Line Tariffs — And A Warning to Lula

Back in July, Trump rolled out a sweeping set of executive measures punishing Brazil’s leadership, which included:

  • A 50 percent tariff on Brazilian imports
  • A 50 percent tariff on specific copper goods
  • The closure of a long-standing tax loophole that let foreign sellers ship low-value packages into the U.S. duty-free

Trump warned Lula directly, threatening even harsher consequences if the socialist regime continued persecuting political opponents, including former President Jair Bolsonaro.

Bolsonaro, still beloved by millions in Brazil, is engulfed in a politically charged investigation claiming he attempted a “coup” by questioning Brazil’s chaotic 2022 election — an election many Brazilians insist was tainted by irregularities. Instead of mobilizing the military, Bolsonaro held rallies and called for transparency. That alone has been enough for Lula’s government to unleash sweeping prosecutions.

Brazilians Face Harsh Punishments For Minor Acts of Protest

The crackdown has escalated dramatically. After Lula took office, demonstrators breached the nation’s Supreme Court building in a protest compared to January 6 — and the punishments have been extreme.

Some protesters have been sentenced to decades in prison despite committing what critics call nonviolent property offenses. One mother, Débora Rodrigues dos Santos, received a shocking 17-year sentence for writing a short phrase on a statue: “you lost, loser.”

Lula’s administration hasn’t stopped there. Lawmakers, journalists, and conservative commentators have been jailed or forced to flee the country, as Brazil’s justice system turns into an instrument of political revenge.

The Bottom Line: Trump’s Move Sends a Message

Trump’s tariff reversal sends a dual message — relief for American families suffering under Biden-era inflation and a reminder to Brazil’s socialist leadership that Washington still holds leverage.

By unlocking cheaper imports of beef, coffee, cocoa, and fruit, Trump is making a clear play to lower food prices quickly, something the Biden team has utterly failed to achieve. At the same time, he’s signaling that the door is open for Brazil… but only if Lula stops weaponizing the courts against Bolsonaro and the Brazilian right.

Once again, Trump is proving he can walk and chew gum at the same time: punish bad actors, reward free trade when it helps Americans, and keep global dictatorships in check.
