Donald Trump’s mission to “drain the swamp” took an unexpected turn when his nominee for the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister, withdrew from consideration. Trump, however, was quick to clarify that this was no resignation—it was his decision.
The nomination of Chronister immediately sparked criticism from conservatives. Among the voices was Kentucky Congressman Thomas Massie, who took to X (formerly Twitter) to voice his opposition.
“I’m going to call ‘em like I see ‘em. Trump’s nominee for head of DEA should be disqualified for ordering the arrest of a pastor who defied COVID lockdowns,” Massie posted.

Chronister had arrested Pastor Rodney Howard-Browne during the pandemic for holding church services despite Florida’s lockdown orders. Howard-Browne faced charges for unlawful assembly and violating public health rules, though these were eventually dropped. The pastor’s arrest, conservatives argued, was a direct attack on religious freedom.
