In a move shaking the political establishment, President Donald Trump announced Monday that he is taking unprecedented action to restore order in Washington, D.C. Citing “an emergency of a tragic and embarrassing nature,” Trump invoked Section 740 of the D.C. Home Rule Act to place the city’s Metropolitan Police Department under direct federal authority.
The law grants the President power to seize control of the MPD during emergencies threatening public safety. Trump signed two major executive actions: one invoking these powers and another directing the Secretary of Defense to bring in National Guard units to help stabilize the city. Letters notifying D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser and congressional leadership were also dispatched, as required by law.
“This city will no longer be a sanctuary for illegal alien criminals,” Trump declared. “We will have full, seamless, integrated cooperation at all levels of law enforcement, and we’ll deploy officers across the district with an overwhelming presence.”
