President Trump’s much-hyped tax reform package—branded the “One Big Beautiful Bill”—hit a major roadblock Friday, not from Democrats, but from within his own party. Despite strong public support from Trump and promises of sweeping tax relief and Medicaid reform, a group of House Republicans bucked party leadership and voted to tank the measure during a Budget Committee hearing.

The bill failed with a vote of 16-21, as five Republican members—Reps. Chip Roy (TX), Ralph Norman (SC), Andrew Clyde (GA), Josh Brecheen (OK), and Lloyd Smucker (PA)—joined Democrats in rejecting the package. While Smucker later claimed his vote was a procedural tactic, the damage was already done.
“To be clear—I fully support the One Big Beautiful Bill (OBBB). My vote today in the Budget Committee is a procedural requirement to preserve the committee’s opportunity to reconsider the motion to advance OBBB,” Smucker said on X.
