The Trump administration is expanding its investigation into potential noncitizen voter registration and illegal voting, with federal authorities seeking records involving tens of thousands of registered voters across at least 13 states.
The Justice Department has reportedly issued more than 100 subpoenas to state and local election offices as investigators examine whether individuals who are not U.S. citizens improperly registered to vote or cast ballots in federal elections.
The investigation comes just days before the midterm elections, placing election integrity and voter eligibility back at the center of the national political debate.
According to Reuters, which identified the subpoenas through public-records requests and interviews with election officials, many of the demands for records were issued over the past three months. Others reportedly date back to earlier in the year.
