For Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the politics of 2028 are already creating a problem that cannot be solved with a clever slogan.
The New York Democrat is facing renewed scrutiny over her 2020 support for the “defund the police” movement, including one statement that is difficult to reinterpret years later: “Defunding police means defunding police.”
That history has resurfaced as Democrats wrestle with how far the party should move toward its progressive wing—and whether candidates associated with the politics of 2020 can persuade voters in competitive states.
