Mel Gibson is officially moving forward with his long-awaited sequel to “The Passion of the Christ.” Production for “The Resurrection of the Christ” is set to begin in August, according to a new report from Variety.

The sequel will continue the story from Gibson’s groundbreaking 2004 film, which remains the highest-grossing independent movie of all time. “The Passion of the Christ” stunned Hollywood with its global success, earning over $600 million on a budget of just $30 million. Now, Gibson is gearing up to take audiences on another spiritual and cinematic journey.

Cinecittà Studios, one of Italy’s premier film production facilities, will host the movie’s filming.

“I can confirm that the next film directed by Mel Gibson, produced by Icon Productions, ‘The Resurrection of Christ,’ will be shot entirely in Cinecittà starting in August, and requires many theaters and stage constructions,” Manuela Cacciamani, CEO of the Italian studio, told news outlet Il Sole 24 Ore.
