ESPN personality Stephen A. Smith found himself defending an unusual political decision during a tense appearance on ABC’s The View: sitting down with President Donald Trump at the White House rather than criticizing him from a distance.
The outspoken sports commentator had spent more than four hours with Trump, using the opportunity to discuss issues affecting Black Americans, including federal support for historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs), employment concerns, and the potential consequences of the administration’s diversity policies.
But when Smith appeared on the daytime talk show, the conversation quickly turned into a disagreement over whether meeting with Trump was worthwhile in the first place.
