For decades, American holidays have been quietly exporting themselves abroad. But this year, something unusual is happening across the Atlantic. Young Britons are turning Thanksgiving into a celebration America never expected.
Britain never historically celebrated Thanksgiving — after all, the holiday commemorates America’s break from British rule. But that is rapidly changing. Mintel research shows that 42% of British Gen Z and millennials have already celebrated Thanksgiving.¹ Another 16% plan to attend or host their first Thanksgiving dinner this November.¹
More than half of young Britons now view American holidays, like Thanksgiving and Halloween, as permanent fixtures replacing traditional British celebrations.¹
Trish Caddy, a food service trends analyst at Mintel, told The Guardian, “U.K. interest in Thanksgiving reflects a growing appetite for American food. It’s less cultural adoption, more culinary celebration.”²
