The Olympic Games have long stood as a symbol of unity, national pride, and athletic excellence. But once again, that tradition is being tested as political activism seeps into what is supposed to be one of the few apolitical global events left. This time, the controversy comes from inside Team USA itself.
Two American freestyle skiers competing at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina, Italy, publicly expressed dissatisfaction and emotional conflict about representing the United States. Their reasoning had nothing to do with sports or competition, but instead centered on domestic immigration enforcement carried out by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Chris Lillis, a gold medalist from the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics and one of the nation’s top aerials skiers, told reporters he was struggling emotionally as he competes under the American flag. Lillis said he felt “heartbroken” over ICE operations and the protests surrounding them.
He added that the country should “focus on respecting everybody’s rights and making sure that we’re treating our citizens as well as anybody with love and respect.”
While Lillis attempted to frame his remarks as compassionate, critics were quick to point out that ICE exists to enforce federal law, not to engage in political theater. The frustration from conservatives was immediate, with many asking why an elite athlete representing the United States would choose an Olympic stage to criticize his own country.
