Teacher Calls MAGA Shirt a ‘Hate Crime!’

“It is not a neutral stance when one group is allowed to express their political views (even if those views are racist, misogynistic, antisemi[tic] and homophobic) and the other side is silenced under threat of losing their job and/or being seriously reprimanded,” the teacher continued in the email.

The teacher then went on to claim that the student’s MAGA shirt reflected a broader, dangerous ideology. She accused the student of harboring “a deep hatred of minorities, women, non-Christian religions, and LGBTQ+” individuals. According to the teacher, wearing the shirt at school amounted to a “HATE crime.”

Asserting her personal identity and her advocacy for certain groups, the teacher stated, “As a Latina woman, who is agnostic at best but leans towards atheism and a mother of an LGBTQ+ daughter and supporter of ALL my LGBTQ+ students, I do not feel safe at work, and I fear for the safety of my daughter and my students when administration allows students to wear clothing that expresses their utter disdain and hatred of women, minorities, non-Christian religions, and the LGBTQ+ community.”

The teacher’s remarks did not stop there. She further described President Trump as a “fascist put into office by people who fear the changing demographics of a country,” while simultaneously disregarding the historical context of America’s immigrant roots. “Never mind that this country was founded by people immigrating to this great country as they fled dictators and tyrants (my dad from Cuba) or impoverished countries (my grandmother from Mexico) and have come to this country to give their children a better life and opportunity at an education,” she added.

In a dramatic turn, the teacher announced that she would be taking several days off to focus on her mental health, admitting that she was struggling to reconcile the political environment at her school. “I will be taking some time off to try to come up with a better definition of what political neutrality looks like in the classroom so that we can all feel safe coming to school, rather than being intimidated by MAGA attire which has promised to end social services, including education as we know them,” the teacher wrote.

The teacher also requested that students “keep the politics at home, not in the classroom,” in an apparent call for a less politically charged school environment.

In response to the incident, the ABC Unified School District confirmed that it was aware of the situation and was investigating the teacher’s actions. A district spokesperson told the Daily Mail, “We encourage students to exercise their freedom of speech within the policies set by our Board of Education and California Education Code.”

This incident highlights the ongoing tension surrounding political expression in schools, with critics arguing that educators are becoming increasingly hostile toward students whose views differ from their own. While the district remains engaged in the matter, it is unclear what, if any, disciplinary actions will follow. In the meantime, the controversy continues to spark debates over free speech, political neutrality, and the role of teachers in shaping students’ political outlooks.
