As the 2024 election season heats up, a key battleground state is making headlines over its decision to eliminate ballot drop boxes. Luzerne County, located in northeastern Pennsylvania, has announced that it will remove all ballot drop boxes ahead of the November election, citing both financial and security reasons. This decision has sparked debate and raised questions about how voters will cast their ballots in one of the most important swing states.
According to Romilda Crocamo, Luzerne County’s manager, the county simply does not have the resources or manpower to ensure that the drop boxes can be adequately secured. “While I recognize that drop boxes can provide alternative means for voters to cast their ballots, I must prioritize the safety and security of our community in the current political climate,” Crocamo explained in a statement to WNEP, a local ABC affiliate. “We don’t have the capability, we don’t have the number of staff members to actually stand by the drop boxes to keep them safe, so I decided I’m not going to deploy them.”

This decision means that voters in Luzerne County who use mail-in ballots will need to either send them directly to the Bureau of Elections or physically drop them off at the bureau’s headquarters, eliminating the convenience of local drop boxes.
