In a rare moment of agreement, Senator Bernie Sanders surprised viewers on ABC’s This Week by throwing his support behind President Donald Trump’s tough stance on the U.S.-Mexico border. During the interview, Sanders acknowledged the need for stronger border enforcement and action against the fentanyl crisis, echoing policies Trump has championed for years.
“I think cracking down on fentanyl, making sure our borders are stronger,” Sanders said when asked if Trump had done anything right during his presidency.
The Vermont senator, a self-proclaimed democratic socialist, admitted that illegal immigration should not be tolerated — a significant shift from the open-borders rhetoric of many in his party.
“Look, nobody thinks illegal immigration is appropriate, and I happen to think we need comprehensive immigration reform, but I don’t think it’s appropriate for people to be coming across the border illegally,” he said.
