The battle lines are being redrawn—literally—in the Lone Star State, and the latest target in the GOP’s crosshairs is none other than Rep. Greg Casar (D-TX), a rising star of the progressive “Squad.” The Texas legislature, led by Republicans, is moving swiftly on a redistricting plan that could effectively push Casar out of his own district, dealing a major blow to the left-wing flank of the Democratic Party.
A proposed map, unveiled Wednesday, dramatically reshapes Texas’s congressional landscape. The new lines would hand Republicans at least five additional seats that Donald Trump carried by 10 points or more in 2024—significantly boosting their odds of maintaining control of the U.S. House after the next election.
Casar’s political career took off in 2022, when he cruised to victory in Texas’s 35th Congressional District with the backing of heavy-hitting progressives like Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY). He dominated his Republican opponent with 73% of the vote, solidifying his place as a left-wing firebrand in Washington.
His district stretches between San Antonio and Austin—two liberal strongholds connected by a deep-blue corridor once represented by Democrat Lloyd Doggett. But if the GOP has its way, that safe haven could be fractured beyond recognition.
