Squad Dem Refuses to Back Kamala – What’s Going On?

In a potentially critical development for the 2024 election, Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), a prominent figure in the Congressional “Squad” and well-known progressive voice, announced her decision to withhold an endorsement for Vice President Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign. The announcement comes as Michigan is positioned as a must-win swing state for the Harris-Walz campaign, making Tlaib’s non-endorsement all the more impactful.

Michigan’s Muslim community, where Tlaib has established a strong influence, has increasingly voiced dissatisfaction with the Biden-Harris Administration. The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, in particular, has sparked tensions between the administration and some progressive Democrats, with Tlaib at the forefront of that divide. Tlaib, who has previously accused the Biden-Harris Administration of endorsing “genocide” by supporting Israel’s military actions in Gaza, has consistently pushed back against what she sees as unconditional U.S. support for Israel.

Earlier in the Democratic primaries, Tlaib rallied Michigan’s Muslim voters around an “uncommitted” campaign, urging them to consider abstaining from voting for President Biden unless he endorsed a ceasefire in Gaza. In a video message from November 2023, Tlaib conveyed her disapproval of the administration’s policies, saying, “Mr. President, the American people are not with you on this one. We will remember in 2024.” Her words captured the frustration of many within her base, who have since turned their support away from the administration.
