A dramatic late-count shift in the Los Angeles mayoral contest has sparked fresh scrutiny after businessman and mayoral candidate Spencer Pratt slipped from second place to third following a massive ballot update that overwhelmingly benefited Democratic candidates.
The latest vote tally appears to have reshaped the race virtually overnight, putting Democrat City Councilwoman Nithya Raman ahead of Pratt and positioning her as the likely challenger to incumbent Mayor Karen Bass in November’s runoff election.
Mayor Bass has already secured enough support to advance to the next stage of the election. Under Los Angeles election rules, if no candidate captures more than 50 percent of the vote, the top two finishers move on to a runoff.
The newest ballot release delivered a substantial boost to both Democratic candidates. Raman picked up more than 19,000 additional votes, while Bass added nearly 16,000. Pratt, meanwhile, gained fewer than 8,500 votes from the same batch. According to the reported figures, roughly 80 percent of the newly counted ballots favored the Democratic contenders.
