Pritzker. What began as a quiet night among friends ended in tragedy and has since grown into a national flashpoint over immigration policy, public safety, and accountability.

Sheridan Gorman, just 18 years old, had only recently begun her college journey. A freshman at Loyola University and a young woman described by those who knew her as warm and deeply kind, she was out late with friends near a Chicago pier. They had gone to catch a rare glimpse of the Northern Lights, a moment that should have been harmless, even magical.

Instead, prosecutors say, a man emerged from the shadows near a lighthouse. When Sheridan noticed him and quietly warned her friends, the situation escalated instantly. The man gave chase. A single gunshot rang out. Sheridan was struck from behind and died at the scene.

The suspect, identified as Jose Medina-Medina, is a Venezuelan national whose history has now become central to the growing controversy. According to federal authorities, he was first encountered at the southern border in 2023 and released into the United States under policies overseen by the administration of Joe Biden. He later made his way to Chicago.
