Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) is once again under fire from inside his own party, with growing calls for him to hand over the reins to a younger, more radical generation. But despite the mounting pressure, Schumer made it crystal clear over the weekend: he’s not going anywhere.
“I am staying put, and I’m fighting the fight every day, as is our caucus, in a united and successful way,” Schumer told CNN’s State of the Union on Sunday. “We’re showing America how bad Trump is, and showing that Republicans who embrace Trump do so at their peril.”

The noise for new leadership grew louder last week after longtime Senate Democrat Dick Durbin announced he would not seek reelection, signaling the need for fresh faces in the upper chamber. “Pass the torch,” Durbin said during his farewell announcement, a phrase echoed by outgoing Michigan Senator Gary Peters back in February.
“I always knew there would come a time to pass the torch to the next generation of public servants and allow them the opportunity to bring fresh energy and ideas to our nation’s capital,” Peters stated at the time, according to The Daily Beast.
