Democrats Miscalculate GOP Strength
Schumer and his allies had been banking on Republicans faltering in the House. With a slim GOP majority and libertarian-leaning Rep. Thomas Massie’s habitual opposition to large spending bills, Democrats hoped the CR would fail before reaching the Senate. But Speaker Mike Johnson delivered, securing enough votes to pass the measure and putting Senate Democrats in a bind.
