In a recent turn of events that has sparked outrage and heated debates across social media, a California seventh-grader, Jimmy Heyward, has been prohibited from attending his school next year following a dispute over a patriotic speech. This decision by Saint Bonaventure Catholic School comes on the heels of an incident where Jimmy was allegedly censored by the school principal during a school event.
According to reports, Jimmy’s principal, Mary Flock, demanded that he edit his speech for a student council election, specifically to remove any references to patriotism. This directive came despite Jimmy running for the role of Commissioner of School Spirit and Patriotism—a position that inherently involves promoting patriotism. LibsofTikTok first brought this to public attention with a post stating, “This is Jimmy. A middle schooler in California… His principal allegedly made him change his speech and remove all mention of patriotism. When he refused, she reportedly didn’t allow him to give the speech and he was forced to sit there humiliated, and watch the other contenders give their speeches…”

In his controversial speech, Jimmy expressed his motivation, stating, “My love for America is my motivation for running for Commissioner of Patriotism in School Spirit.” He criticized the casual approach some people take towards national symbols and pledged to enhance the understanding of the P.A. among his peers. Jimmy emphasized, “I want to fix this so everyone understands the meaning of the Pledge of Allegiance.”
