In a shocking case of fraud and theft, Vera Liddell, a former food service director for Harvey School District 152 in Illinois, has been sentenced to nine years in prison. Liddell, who worked for the impoverished Chicago-area district for over a decade, was found guilty of embezzling $1.5 million worth of chicken wings from the school district during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The crime unfolded during a time when schools were closed, and students were learning remotely. Despite the absence of students on campus, the school district continued to offer meal programs for families to pick up. However, Liddell took advantage of this system, ordering an astonishing 11,000 cases of chicken wings using the district’s funds.

Prosecutors revealed that Liddell personally collected the chicken wings using a county van, but the food never made it to the school or the students it was intended to feed.
